Interdisciplinary Education
Group (IEG)
The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) uses
examples of nanotechnology and advanced materials to explore science
and engineering concepts at the college level and brings the "wow"
and potential of nanotechnology and advanced materials to the public.
Internships
in Public Science Education (IPSE)
MRSEC
has teamed up with Milwaukee-based Discovery World, Wisconsin's
largest science center, to connect audiences of all ages with world-class
science expertise and cutting-edge research that might not otherwise
be available to them. Graduate and undergraduate interns design
hands-on, minds-on activities and tabletop demonstrations to explain
cutting-edge nanotechnology using basic science concepts.
Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
The objective of this summer research program is to provide targeted
student populations with opportunities to test their interest in
science and engineering careers. Participating students conduct
their own eight-week research project from June to August under
the direction of the College of Engineering faculty members and
work as members of laboratory research teams investigating problems
in engineering and physical sciences in a well recognized academic
environment.
Research
Experience for Teachers (RET)
The RET
program is funded by the a National Science Foundation. It provides
a professional development opportunity to K-12 science teachers
by placing them in a research laboratory during the summer. The
program that has been established focuses on materials science and
science at the nanoscale, the scale of atoms.

Nanotechnology Research
Materials Research Science
and Engineering Center
MRSEC
was established by the National Science Foundation to carry out
research in the formation, characterization, and exploitation of
materials at the nanoscale - the scale of individual atoms. It focuses
on the fundamental understanding of topics of substantial technological
importance and the communication of this understanding to the public.
The research is carried out by interdisciplinary research groups
(IRGs) on a rolling horizon basis and smaller seed groups on a limited-term
(2 - 3 year) basis.
